Rudy's Pizza Nottingham — JBL Background Music & Zoned Control

Venue: Rudy's Pizza Nottingham. Pro Technical was engaged to design and install background music across the customer dining areas and service zones with zoned control and centralised source management. The scope included specifying speaker locations and counts, providing independent level control per area, integrating local control keypads for staff, and delivering a compact rack-mounted equipment solution compatible with the venue's existing mains and network infrastructure.

The venue presented an open-plan dining layout with hard surfaces and close seating, which can make achieving even background coverage without masking speech difficult. Available plant/rack space and existing mains and network locations limited where central equipment could be installed. The venue also required simple local controls for front-of-house staff to manage music levels and source selection.

Pro Technical specified a Cloud Electronics zoned system as the central control and distribution architecture. The decision preserved independent zone level control and source routing for separate areas including main dining, and an basement seating area. JBL background-music loudspeakers were selected and positioned according to coverage requirements. The design pack documented a zoning map, speaker counts and locations, cable routing, power and network requirements.

Installed systems (high-level): a Cloud Electronics zoned system handling centralised audio distribution and control, and JBL background music loudspeakers deployed around the dining and service spaces. The architecture used a centralised media player as the primary source. Each zone had independent level control and source selection.

Works were scheduled around the venue's construction phase. Commercially rated audio cable runs and local network cabling were installed to the equipment cupboard. Compact equipment was chosen to meet the available rack space and heat-management requirements. JBL speakers were mounted on discreet brackets in locations defined by the zoning map. All rack wiring and terminations were labelled to industry best practice to support straightforward maintenance and future expansion.

Commissioning activities included level matching, zone balancing and functional verification of source switching and paging. Pro Technical performed SPL measurements across seating areas to confirm even coverage, and listening tests during typical occupancy levels to verify speech intelligibility and ambience. Deliverables from commissioning comprised a final wiring diagram, documented zone-level settings, a short user guide for staff and a commissioning report noting any recommended infrastructure items for future consideration.

Pro Technical delivered a multi-zone background music installation using a Cloud Electronics zoned system and JBL loudspeakers that provides independent level control and source routing across the venue's dining and service areas. The installation supported staff-friendly local control, reliable paging behaviour and a compact central equipment installation compatible with the venue's constraints. Documentation and staff training were provided as part of handover, and a 12-month service check was recommended to verify ongoing balance and firmware currency.
