The brief

Pro Technical was engaged to provide a background-music and zoned audio solution for Rudy's Pizza Spitalfields. The venue required centralised source management, independent level control for multiple areas, simple local control keypads for front-of-house staff and a compact rack-mounted equipment solution that would fit within the available plant space. The scope included speaker location and count specification, cable-route definition, power and network requirement checks and integration with the venue's existing mains and network infrastructure.

The challenge

Rudy's Pizza is an open-plan dining area dominated by hard reflective surfaces and closely spaced seating. These acoustic conditions make even low-level background coverage difficult: without careful deployment, music can mask speech or create loud hotspots. In addition, the building provided only limited plant and rack space and fixed mains/network access points, which constrained where central equipment could be located. The venue also required the works to be carried out with minimal trading disruption and for all terminations and labelling to be maintainable for future service work.

Design decisions

To satisfy the requirement for independent zone control and centralised source management, Pro Technical specified a Cloud Electronics zoned system as the central distribution and control platform. The Cloud Electronics architecture supports discrete per-zone level control and source routing and was selected in-line with the brief’s stated need for programmable presets and keypad control. JBL background-music loudspeakers were chosen for deployment across dining and service zones. The design deliverables comprised a zoning map, speaker positions, cable routing diagrams, and specified positions for wall-mounted keypad controls to give staff simple local access to volume and source selection.

Equipment and system architecture

The installed system consists of a Cloud Electronics zoned system handling audio distribution, control and zone logic, together with JBL background-music loudspeakers deployed throughout the dining and service areas. A centralised media player was mounted in a locked equipment cupboard to provide the primary music source. Each zone is configured in the Cloud Electronics platform with independent level control and source selection. Paging priority settings were implemented so announcements can interrupt music only in selected zones. Network connections were provided to each keypad location to allow local control and potential future remote management where a network endpoint exists.

Installation

Works began with a pre-installation site survey to validate plant-room access and confirm cable routes. Pro Technical scheduled the majority of on-site activity during quieter trading periods to minimise disruption. Commercial-grade audio cabling and local network cabling were run to the locked equipment rack; compact, low-profile rack equipment was chosen to suit the available space and heat-management constraints. JBL speakers were mounted on discreet brackets at positions defined by the zoning map; where required, isolation mounts were used to reduce vibration transfer into lightweight building elements. Wall-mounted control keypads were installed at staff stations with tamper-resistant fixings and clear labelling. All rack and wall terminations were labelled to industry best practice to simplify maintenance and future expansion.

Commissioning

Commissioning comprised SPL measurements and zone balancing to confirm even background coverage and acceptable speech intelligibility across the seating plan. Pro Technical carried out listening tests at typical occupancy levels and adjusted equalisation and zone-level settings accordingly. The Cloud Electronics system was programmed with practical presets—examples included 'Service', 'Quiet hours' and 'Evening'—and keypad behaviour and user interaction were documented for staff. Paging logic and priority were verified to ensure announcements only interrupted intended zones. At handover Pro Technical supplied a final wiring diagram, documented zone-level settings, a short user guide for staff and a commissioning report listing any recommended infrastructure items for future consideration.

The result

Pro Technical delivered a multi-zone background music installation using a Cloud Electronics zoned system with JBL loudspeakers. The system provides independent zone level control and source routing across dining and service areas, simple local keypad control for staff and reliable paging behaviour with configured priorities. The compact central equipment installation fits within the venue's rack constraints and all installation work was documented to support maintenance and future expansion. A 12-month service check was recommended to verify balance and firmware currency.
